Review of The Wicker Man (1973) by Brian S — 12 May 2011
A bit boring by conventional horror standards, so let's tackle it from a different angle. what makes it scary is its unflinching continuity. the people of the island go about their bizarre, societal-fringe activities without the slightest indication of remorse, regret, hesitation, or doubt.
they are going to do what they do and there is absolutely nothing anyone can do to stop them or talk them out of it. part of the reason the ending is so chilling is because of the joyful singing and dancing that accompanies it.
the twist is fantastic--it's amazingly simple and you almost hate yourself for not picking up on it sooner because the entire premise of the film makes no sense without it. nonetheless, it's still a great a-ha moment.
the motifs of Paganism vs. Christianity are also surprisingly quite intriguing. do I love it? no. does it deserve the title of cult classic? yes.
