Review of The Wicker Man (1973) by Baurushan J — 15 Aug 2012
One thing I love about this movie is how you're just forced to accept what it throws at you. At first you're annoyed with the random musical songs and seeing the rituals, but the more you uncover along with Sgt.
Howie (Edward Woodward), the more you start to accept and, as for my case, start enjoying the trippy sequences and images of the tribal chants and Mayday. The stuff that happened on Mayday were some of my favorite sequences.
I didn't think the exposition was very well handled; I thought it was kinda boring and not that interesting, and I found out what was going on as the movie went on. I thought the acting was pretty good, singling out Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee with praise; Lee taking an interesting approach to the character.
I thought he was going to be some charismatic mastermind; instead, he acts like just a preacher. I wasn't entirely happy with the way they handled the exposition at the end; I didn't think it was that necessary explaining why he was there.
Also, I thought the Wicker Man was going to be a more recurring theme in the movie instead of being a last minute thing. Overall, it was worth watching.
