Review of The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights (2009) by Kyle G — 22 May 2012
Great music in a fun and energetic presentation, capturing all the appeal of the inimitable White Stripes, that small bastion of lean, jaunty, wonderful rock music.
The documentary shows some interesting choices -- first the crowd-pleasing new songs and then a more eclectic mix across the whole catalog; a handful of entire songs stabilizing a few strings of short clips; and a brave organization of physical touring/performance with more introspective, random pieces -- but it's still a while till there's anything like a real revelatory statement, and that delay could be a killer.
It also ends on a stark, inscrutable note of sadness, seeming to make a strange yelp of austerity, which might be a disingenuous and off-key way to close.
