Review of The White Countess (2005) by Brandy D — 22 Jul 2009
This movie is about small, insignificant individuals caught in the change of time. While I agree with what Stephen Holden of the New York Times said of the film, "What is missing from a film that wants to be an Asian Casablanca crossed with The English Patient is a racing, dramatic pulse.
Its sedate tone is simply too refined for the story it has to tell." The quite pace of the movie worked for me. It does not weep you off your feet and carry you forward with dramatic emotions, but it's overwhelming in a entirely different way.
