Review of The Wendell Baker Story (2005) by Auli H — 15 Jan 2009
Well, it's got luke wilson. so you know it's going to be a movie about luke wilson with another name, and that's precisely why I love luke wilson.
Sure, in some cases, an actor or actress needs to pull themselves into a completely obscure role. but, in other cases, an actor just being themselves through a role can be just as good.
Owen and luke are owen and luke. the presence of their older brother, andrew, is uncanny in the direction of the movie (though I wish he had a role!).
This is AT LEAST worth a rent simply for the cameos. will ferrel is hysterically out-of-place and actually plays a small part without being off-the-wall, screwball goofy... but he's still great. also, any fans of wes anderson's "bottle rocket" will surely recognize robert musgraves' (bob mapplethorpe in bottle rocket) cameo as the police officer towards the end of the movie; very clever.
All in all, it's no masterpiece, but it's got good character themes and the overall heartwarming essence that those wilsons are just too darned good at creating.
