Review of The Wendell Baker Story (2005) by Jason G — 20 Mar 2010
Decent turns at "acting" from a cast, better known for humour.
I liked the cast so I thought I'd give it a shot. It must be tough for Luke Wilson. I personally think he's the more talented of the two Wilson Brothers but Owen seems to have grabbed that brass ring and left his brother in the dust.
Eddie Griffin, Owen and Luke Wilson and a cameo appearance by Will Ferrell are enough to set you in a certain frame of mind going in... but don't expect great, obvious comedy or you might be disappointed.
This likable cast is rounded out by veteran actors, Kris Kristoferson and Harry Dean Stanton and Luke Wilson does a better than decent job on his directorial debut managing to keep the story moving at a good clip.
Eva Mendez is the love interest and sadly, isn't given much to do... even Will Ferrell tries to play it as straight as he can but his onscreen time seems far too subdued and patently so.... like he's just holding back a truckload of simmering zaniness - - that - never - makes - an - appearance......
You will get a few laughs out of THE WENDELL BAKER STORY... (just go in with lowered expectations).
It's not HORRIBLE...
It's probably EXACTLY what it was meant to be...
It just isn't what you're going to expect...
