Review of The Weight of Water (2001) by Adam B — 27 Aug 2006
Directed by Kathryn Bigelow.
Starring Catherine McCormack, Sean Penn, Sarah Polley, Elizabeth Hurley.
A bikini-clad Hurley in the poster readily suggests a steamy, illogical movie brimming with sex, infidelity and murder. Thank God, this is not one of those. And nothing there suggested that this is a parallel story between the present and the past, characters evidently hiding something and an unsolved tale of murder that the so-called weight of the movie was immediate. What?s so good about this kind of movie is that there are two expected climaxes and how one is intricately linked with the other makes it challenging and involving. You?ll know there will be a razor-sharp dance with death. For the director, this is a joy to make having two sets of actors to work on.
Best Scene: A drunk Thomas embarrasses his wife when he can?t remember the words. ?Maybe, I?m just trying to get into your pants??
QUOTE: Thomas (Penn): ?Talent excuses cruelty??
