The first 30 minutes of this film is absolutely compelling viewing as a group of POWs escape a Siberian camp. The rest of the film features stunning natural images and great performances but features actors walking and walking and walking and walking.
They cross thousands of miles of terrain with the purpose of getting to a free India. We somewhat get to know the characters along the way. There is a lack of dramatic conflict but master filmmaker Peter Weir was probably weary of introducing many cliches.
Worth a watch but not Weir's best work.
