You would think a story about escaping from a Siberian gulag through the Mongolian desert to India would be gripping, harrowing, and above all, have intense character development. In the case of "The Way Back" you'd be wrong.
Yes, the escapees endure and survive horrible conditions. But the viewer has no real emotional connection to the men. You just watch them trudge on and on and on. The movie is just OK when it could have been so much better.
Recommended for adventure film fans.
