Review of The Way Back (2010) by Arkadius K — 08 Dec 2013
As a true story, this movie's uneventful, plodding pace might have been acceptable, but as a work of fiction, it falls far short as an entertaining yarn. Aside from Ed Harris (Mr. Smith) the other characters seem like wobbly weaklings, just lucky to still be alive throughout the ordeal.
Some of the special effects are implausible and badly over-done, such as the mosquito bites causing faces to swell up with sores, and disappearing magically when a wreath of some type of plant is placed around everyone's neck.
The idea of walking thousands of miles with almost no food after escaping starvation in a prison camp is also physically impossible, yet they manage to look not much worse for wear (aside from dehydration) throughout the journey.
Overall, it was a movie I was hoping would end much sooner than it did.
