Review of The Way (2010) by Chris K — 15 Jun 2012
âThere is so much crap from Hollywood today, and it is so easy to take evil fruit and make a film out of it. But the fruit at the top of the tree is much better and much sweeter, and the view is gorgeous.â? - Emilio Estevez on Hollywood film of today, from the Virginia Tech premiere of The Way.
Quality, Quality, Quality. The Way, starring Martin Sheen who plays a working man who has his life turned upside down by the death of his son, is a wholesome, entertaining and truly genuine film.
IT'S NOT PERFECT, but this film seriously nails the quality of filming that I love. It has a great story, but is driven by the colorful cast of characters. The cinematography is gorgeous and the source material is one of a kind. It lags at one or two moments, and the beginning is a little rushed, but the end result is a one of a kind âThe Wizard of OZâ? story of finding oneself.
The Good: Great Story; Lovable characters; filled with positive and clever humor; Beautiful Cinematography; Original Soundtrack; Great Pacing; A movie with a message from Hollywood!
The Bad: The beginning felt rushed (but is also a positive because it doesnâ(TM)t dwell in the everyday life scene, but on the road); Lags somewhat, but picks up and finishes great.
I saw the film as part of a tour that Sheen/Estevez were doing for the film, and we got the film to come down to Virginia Tech, Home of the HOKIES! Anyway, I am so glad to see one director taking risks and creating a wholesome film with a colorful, and funny, cast of characters. The is the definition of good dealmaking. Great job Estevez!
