Review of The Water Diviner (2014) by Kerri L — 13 Jan 2015
Bitterly disappointed to see a film that so falsely portrays history. I noticed at the start of the film that the executive producer is James Packer, an owner of casinos in Australia. One can only hope that Russell Crowe didn't receive history lessons from Packer because the portrayal of the Turks in this film is a gross distortion.
During the period the film was shot, the Turks were massacring millions of their own citizens. Upwards of 1 million Armenians were massacred, driven into the desert without food and water. They also massacred a million Greeks and also Assyrians.
Yet rusty portrays the Turk as victim? Also, it would have been highly unlikely for an Aussie to have waltzed into Turkey during those years to look for his sons, as Ottoman Turkey was at war. In fact, I highly doubt it.
If we take away the historical inaccuracies and the fact that this was not a true story as they tell us at the start, it's an OK film at best.
