Review of The Warriors (1979) by Mikal C — 08 Feb 2010
I was introduced to the warriors by a friend who likes any movie put in front of him. I could've easily dismissed it right then, but he proceeded to plug the film to an obscene amount. I had no choice but to see it for myself. Let me start by saying that Ajax the womanizing hothead/James Remar/Raiden in Mortal Kombat, is in fact my favorite. Simply because his lust for power knew no bounds & was only subdued by its own blindness. Simply put, he was a bada** who "don't take no sh** from nobody". The fights in Warriors while some may find them mediocre when compared to fight sequences we've grown accustomed to nowadays, (the matrix) for me they are as raw & real as any ever caught on film. There are so many things that work in this movie, simply because of the fact that the stars of the film were not fake or invincible. It adds to its own lore & the fact that it was shot in all of the actual locations, does nothing but strengthen the film. The characters were exactly who they were & nothing more.A bunch of guys in a gang. There is no glorifying being done & no over exaggeration. This is explained thoroughly in the film when Swan the duly appointed leader of the Warriors of Coney Island tells how he is completely unamused by the sight of his own turf after the warriors fight for their lives all night to return there. By the end they are all battered, bruised & tired. It has its own style & subtle touches that set it apart as its own cult classic. Its a huge story in a small package. If there's one thing thats absolute, its that this movie is adored by fans the world over.
So ask yourself "Can you dig it sucka".
