Review of The Warriors (1979) by Mario H — 21 Nov 2010
A total classic within the annals of cult cinema and, to be honest, pretty groundbreaking for its time. Admittedly, it does feel somewhat dated and particularly corny in more than a few places. But considering this was a low-budget picture made in the late 1970s, it remains an extremely impressive and ultra-cool piece of cinema history.
It's the setting and the characters that really make this one: Daringly shot at real locations around New York city and featuring a host of unique gangs - from the colourful (and somewhat silly) Baseball Furies to the intimidating skinhead Turnball AC's - the film offers an original and engaging atmosphere that compliments the intense and decidedly brutal fight scenes.
Put simply, this movie is awesome. Just make sure you take it with a grain of salt.
