Review of The Ward (2010) by Joshua D — 31 May 2011
I'm still trying to wrap my head around this: John Carpenter was offered Zombieland, but turned it down. He was offered this...and said yes?! It's been over 12 years since Carpenter's last feature film, and this most certainly is NOT the comeback people hoped for.
Still, it's a testament to the man's directorial prowess that this paper-thin, cliched script works AT ALL. Really -- there is no character development, you see every twist coming (I predicted the ending in the first ten minutes), and absolutely no new ground is broken, nothing seems fresh.
I can't help but think that Carpenter is merely cashing a paycheck here. He didn't even score the film! Instead, we get a generic symphonic "horror" score with a few touches of synth here and there.
To sum it up: not really worth anyone's time. Let's hope Carpenter can quietly sweep this one under the rug and have a REAL comeback very soon...that is, if he even cares anymore.
