Review of The Ward (2010) by Noy L — 26 Aug 2011
As a passionate John Carpenter fan, I wanted to love The Ward, but sadly I thought that it languished and never reached its true potential. Instead of rising to the heights of Carpenter's sci-fi/horror masterpieces, The Ward remained at the level of his lesser works like Vampires and Ghosts of Mars.
While Carpenter's two most recent short films (Cigarettes Burns and Pro-Life for the Masters of Horror series) had pulsed with his original creativity and gruesome brilliance, The Ward never quite manages to transcend the mundane horror film that it is.
The Ward looks great and still often features the traces of an accomplished director, but its plot just feels like the same run-of-the-mill crap. In fact, its plot sadly feels like a direct-to-video film.
A few brief moments of greatness cannot make up for the fact that the film is predictable, derivative, and ultimately forgettable.
