Like most John Carpenters films they begin with a little odd setting with the promise of bringing you a ripping horror film. The setting is interestingly somber and atmospheric as it builds up the tension which most horror films forget. The Ward has all the signs of a well intentioned horror film with mysterious characters, a well cast attractive lead. The ghost stories are nothing new but John Carpenter normally creates film without substance and continue to endure over the years. the overall tone of the film loses its way and the film becomes a direct to dvd excuse for John Carpenter to return to directing. Amber Heard is well cast in the lead and offers a strong tough lead. Her character has a back story but isn't revealed until the very end. the rest of the cast are going through the motions and it doesn't allow the film to work.

John Carpenter disappeared from from filmmaking for the best part of a decade which was a shame but this film lacks the frenzy direction he is known for. The Carpenter we once knew has disappeared within convention studio filmmaking which for years he resisted. I really wanted to enjoy this film but the cheap thrills really disappointed and the tone was all over the place.

The writing is typical for this cheap genre film and its a shame as the premise is so much more interesting then the other films before it. the film explores themes that have been done for the last twenty years but this film throws a twist which nearly overcomes the film before it. the tired characters and uninteresting horror theme never comes together and will leave you quite clueless at the conclusion.

The film is a disappointing return for Carpenter who deserves controlled direction. He clearly lacks the eye for the film he is creating at least he's style was all over the films of the eighties. This film could of been a triumph had it been given a little more love.
