Review of The Ward (2010) by Justine F — 29 Jun 2013
It would have been so cool if they called this film JOHN CARPENTER'S GIRL INTERRUPTED since that is in essence what it is. It's GIRL INTERRUPTED, meets SYBIL, meets SHUTTER ISLAND. If you read the Sunday NY Times article on Carpenter you'll know that he's very bitter about the film industry and this was totally a work for hire.
It's the only film of his that he didn't write and/or compose the music. It feels like a middling episode of MASTERS OF HORROR or of one those unknown recent horror flicks Fearnet shows. Nothing really to say about it.
But since it is from Carpenter, it's sort of sad. Aside from HALLOWEEN,which I feel is very serious, Carpenter can always be counted on for some wit and a bit of hokiness that somehow all works because he's so smart.
This ain't witty and the hokey parts are just well, hokey. He has a super cast of young actresses but none have anything to do. Amber Heard from DRIVE ANGRY SHOT IN 3D looks great and you root for her but that's about it.
