Review of The War Zone (1999) by Nicholas A — 02 Jul 2008
Quite the twisted tale of a deep dark secret in a quiet London family, and how it affects their lives after the son discovers it. Great direction by the first timer Roth, who made it feel more like a play than a movie.
A real intimate view into these people's lives. The crazily underrated Ray Winstone delivers a blistering performance performance and he's almost matched by the newcomer Lara Belmont. The main character, the son, another newcomer Freddie Cunliffe, was more like a robot than a person.
And the mom, Tilda Swinton had barely any lines or screentime so that's a drawback. All around this was an engaging film with a great ending that let the viewer piece it together.
