Review of The War of the Worlds (1953) by Ross B — 10 Jan 2012
A staple of the 1950's B-science fiction films, War of the Worlds seems fairly dated by today's standards. Byron Haskin directs this version based off of the classic novel by H.G. Wells. In this film Gene Barry stars as Dr.
Clayton Forrester, a top scientist who suddenly finds himself desperately trying to save the woman who he falls in love with Sylvia (Ann Robinson) and the world from a terrible alien attack. He is mainly trying to save Los Angeles, which is where he is located.
The film has a deeper undertone having been made during the height of the Cold War. There is the sense that nothing man made can actually stop these creatures and for once the situation and our fates are out of our hands.
The special effects were revolutionary at the time, but obviously now seem very fake. It is still fun to watch though and a great example of the 1950s sci fi boom.
