Review of The War of the Roses (1989) by Scott M — 01 Jan 2011
A film so painful to watch that little (if any) joy can be obtained from watching these characters tear their lives apart for seemingly no reason. The plot of this movie hinges on a boring first half hour where you are supposed to believe that these characters were deeply in love, and I just didn't buy that.
DeVito shows up every 15 minutes or so to remind us of how we should feel, and also give us some tedious exposition, which is strange because he also directed the film, giving me the feeling that he obviously didn't know how to convey things visually so instead resorted to a plot device that probably served the book better.
By the time this movie finally gets to the point, I lost all interest in these characters, and the final moments are so anticlimactic that I wonder why they didn't cut off the last couple minutes altogether (just end with the falling chandelier, why go back to DeVito?).
