Review of The Walk (2015) by Akshay P — 09 Oct 2015
This is a thoroughly plain film with nothing that you wouldn't predict after seeing the trailer. The 3D effects are not much to boast about, and aren't used to their full capacity (there's a part where the jacket falls off a building, where they could have really milked the 3D).
JGL's French accent is begging the academy for an Oscar, and loads of pretentiousness has been applied to offset the plainness of this film. At one point when he's walking the wire, Beethoven's Fuer Elise starts playing in the background (you see what I mean).
The film ticks all the cliche boxes for what you'd expect out of a true story "you can do it" type films: of course there's an old mentor who gives sage-like advice that comes in handy later, of course there's one accomplice who's scared of heights who overcomes his fear, of course the main character faces a personality flaw like arrogance (oh no!) that he must be berated for by his girlfriend (he wasn't arrogant at all!).
I thought they might use the 9/11 angle to make the film more interesting, but no there's nothing here that you wouldn't expect. There were times I was wishing he would fall, that the wire would be shaken violently from both ends.
But nope, there's nothing here, it's all cut and dried for a polite viewing.
