Review of The Walk (2015) by Sean T — 23 Jan 2016
A truly amazing story of youthful naïvetà (C) facing just about every fear in life dead-on with the hope of stealing a beautiful and defiant experience. As someone afraid of heights, I could feel my stomach go queasy numerous times during the film. The sense of being there at the Twin Towers is simply spectacular. Zemeckis and his talented CGI team and crew did fantastic work making a story like this feel as real and believable as possible.
I didn't completely like the documentary-style, breaking-the-fourth wall approach of Joseph Gordon-Levitt talking to us to provide exposition. It took away some of the emotional connection to the story for me. But I can see it fitting in with Philippe Petit's magician-like personality, describing his "trick".
Overall, The Walk is an experience worth having simply because it's so unfathomable that this story exists and ends without tragedy. It's truly life-affirming and an inspirational reminder of how much we as human beings can do when we focus on a goal and set our mind, energy and heart into achieving it.
