Review of The Wages of Fear (1953) by Mike B — 22 Jan 2004
This film was perfection. Clouzot created one of the most suspenseful and intriguing films I've ever had the pleasure of viewing. There is almost nothing to complain about, not even anything mediocre about this film.
There are moments in the film that will absolutely shock you, moments that will make you move to the edge of your seat, and moments that will make you hang your head in disbelief.
Wonderful performances from everyone involved help to catapult the movie to the highest level, along with a wonderful script. The conversation between Mario and the old man at the end is fantastic.
You couldn't ask for a better ending either. I found myself wondering how the last ten minutes would play out, thinking that all possible endings would be a disappointment. I was dead wrong. It is the perfect ending to the perfect movie. Not since John Carpenter's The Thing have I seen so much suspense with such a satisfying payoff. This movie goes to show that you can't sell your soul without the devil collecting.
This film blew me away, shattered any expectations I had before I watched it. I strongly and sincerely recommend it to any film fan, not just foriegn film buffs. Anyone who enjoys sitting on the edge of their seat and waiting to see what will happen next will not be disappointed.
