Review of The Wages of Fear (1953) by Bud Q — 22 Oct 2007
A genuinely cruel movie: cruel to its characters and cruel to its viewers. But rather than display the antics of some dime-store psychopath, Wages of Fear puts some ordinary (and even sympathetic) down-on-their-luck cases and one career criminal in a pressure cooker, and just shows what happens (hint: the thug, like Jimmy Cagney in Public Enemy, "ain't so tough.
") And unlike those thrillers that give up all their suspense after the first viewing, Wages of Fear includes a sequence that becomes more unpleasant and nerve-racking with each viewing.
