Review of The Wackness (2008) by Stefano L — 17 Jan 2012
It's 1994, and Luke, a hangdog small-time pot dealer, is just sleepwalking through his summer between high school and college. Lonely, and with little human contact other than his "clients", the one bright spot in his life is his growing friendship with an eccentric psychotherapist (He trades head-shrinking for pot.) and his step-daughter.
A solid film, THE WACKNESS is most entertaining when focusing on the strange mentorship between the shrink (Ben Kingsley) and the kid (Josh Peck). It also succeeds in conveying not just the small details, but also the feel of the "not-so-long-ago-but-in-many-ways-really-long-ago" mid-90's.
Also co-stars Olivia Thirlby as the step-daughter, Famke Janssen as her mother, and Mary-Kate Olsen's skeleton as one of Luke's hippy-dippy regulars.
