Review of The Wackness (2008) by Erick F — 28 Sep 2011
The Wackness tries to cram a couple different movies into one and suffers for it. It's too dark but not funny enough to be a straight up comedy, nor is it serious enough with its darker underpinnings to follow them all the way through.
Instead, we're left with a weird, albeit fairly predicable, coming of age story that doesn't involve a ton of actual growth. The overall acting is fine, with Ben Kingsley at least matching his best output in recent memory, but Josh Peck never struck me as a particularly engaging lead.
That, coupled with the wild tonal shifts and laissez-faire attitude toward drug use, makes for an uneven final product.
