Review of The Voices (2014) by Preston L — 22 Sep 2015

The Voices is a dark comedy starring Ryan Reynolds as a bathtub manufacturer employee suffering from schizophrenia. The voices he hears manifest themselves in his pets and other animals around him and talk him into decisions he has trouble making, including things at work and in his personal life. If I tell you much more then you know the plot of the movie.

Things I Liked:

Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds plays 5 different characters in this movie as he provides the voices to all the animals he hears as well as himself. He does a fantastic job. He's got a great range of emotion and really plays much more than his usual wisecracking pretty-boy that we are used to seeing. It's a great escape and Reynolds sells every moment of it.

The Tone. Dark Comedy is tricky. I have seen some that work and some that absolutely fail. This one works. It's funny but in an off way and it has this bubblegum pep to it that overshadows the darker moments and really makes the whole film work on its own absurd level.

Things I Didn't Like:

The Sideplot Moments. The main plot of the film is intriguing but there are small detours that really don't need to be in the film. They don't add anything other than maybe a laugh or two and they really make the film longer than it needs to be.

Overall. Overall the film is a lot of fun. I know it won't be for everyone but it is truly fun. I had a good time watching this movie and I found it to be a good use of the material and the movie entertains. If you have a chance and are looking for something a little outside of the norm, then check this one out.
