Review of The Voices (2014) by Ben L — 21 Oct 2015
My wife saw this movie on the shelf when we went to the local video store (yes, we still have one) and thought it looked funny. She had no idea what she was getting us into. The Voices is the story of a psychotic young man who thinks his pets are talking to him.
I'll go ahead and spoil the movie, because it's not really worth your time...He then kills several women, and also thinks their heads are talking to him. Eventually he gets caught and killed. It doesn't really have a protagonist, just a bunch of people who don't want to die and one guy who acts like he doesn't want to kill them.
I didn't care about any of the people, and their attempts at dark comedy are lame and never elicited more than a half-hearted chuckle. The movie was all over the place tonally and honestly got rather boring (especially considering so many people were being murdered, which you'd think would be at least somewhat intense.
) The only aspect that even slightly entertained me was Anna Kendrick, who I'm starting to think can do no wrong for me. But even her charm isn't enough to save a movie without a good script. Do not waste your money on The Voices, unless your cat tells you to.
