Review of The Visit (2015) by Najd G — 24 Apr 2016
Overall, I do recommend this film, but it has its serious flaws. From the very beginning, the story is so contrived and highly implausible that it became difficult to â??buy inâ?? to its story arc. Thatâ??s not to say itâ??s not engaging - I was on edge the whole film, and say what you will about him, but M. Night sure knows how to tap into very talented child actors. I also appreciated the amount of subtle detail that went into this film, a trademark of Shyamalan that isnâ??t as appreciated as it perhaps should be. In terms of this aspect, thereâ??s enough substance here to hold over a monthâ??s worth of students in a film analysis class.
Without giving anything away, the climax and resolution left me dissatisfied at first, but as time has gone on, Iâ??ve come to appreciate it more. The film culminates in a sleight of hand that amounts to not much more than a violation of Chekhovâ??s Gun principle, but for what itâ??s worth, I felt like the M. Night Shyamalan of â??Sixth Senseâ?? and â??Signsâ?? was finally back to form.
