Review of The Visit (2015) by Gimly M — 02 Jun 2016
On the one hand, it's invariably the best thing that The Shamhammer's directed since 2002, but the flip side of that is that it's still not actually very good.
Though I'm prone to speculation in my mind, its not often that I bring my speculations up out loud, especially while the movie is playing. But the "twist" here was telegraphed so obviously from the start that my roommate and I looked at one another and said "So what're we thinking, it's actually X?" and it was indeed X. Going in I'd actually forgotten that twists are The Shamhammer's thing, it wasn't until I sat down to start writing this that I remembered, and yet we still both saw it coming a mile off.
Now that doesn't in and of itself make a movie bad, not at all. However a well executed, original, thought-out, and truly surprising twist *can* make a film good. But that's just one more good thing The Visit *didn't* have.
