Review of The Visit (2015) by Connor M — 21 Jun 2017
One of the biggest things I can appreciate in the movie industry is a great Horror/Thriller. I love it when a director perfectly executes a Horror film and completely makes it his own, and that can end up being one of my favorite films to come out that year.
M. Night Shyamalan perfected this feeling early in his career, but has taken a major step backward since The Village. When I saw the trailers for this film at the time I was a bit optimistic about it because it didn't have a large budget and it had unknown actors as well.
I wanted to give Shyamalan another chance, and I believe this is a step in the right direction. Is this a perfect film? No, definitely not, but I think this film is what Shyamalan needed for him to get back on the right track to becoming a great writer/director again.
I thought this film would have a lot of shaky-cam with the found-footage approach, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was done quite well. Some jokes didn't really hit home for me throughout the film, and it had a awkward feeling to it, but I feel that the suspense built throughout the rest of the film made it for the questionable dialogue.
The young leads in the film did a great job in my opinion, and I can see them getting more work down the road. The signature Shyamalan twist is pretty abrupt and out of the blue, and I wasn't very happy or mad about the twist, but rather in between.
Regardless of the twist, I thought Shyamalan did a solid job with this film, and I'm glad both The Visit and Split have set him on the right track back to greatness.
