Look, I understand this is probably difficult material to adapt, but that doesn't excuse poor execution. Coppola expects us to get engaged with her teenagers even though we're held away at arms length, forced to parse together empathy out of meaningless sequences and bland characters.
Suicidal bookmarks and a showy style does not save an empty story.
