Sofia Coppola's mournful adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides' novel is made by some lovely insights on childhood and relationships. It's well acted, with understated performances from the "sisters" in particular, while the pace and atmosphere of the film is beautifully measured.

The central problem, however, is that there are far too many characters, meaning that within "the boys" and "the girls" (with the exception of Lux) none have clear personalities. The sisters are of course intended to be enigmatic, but their characters are so thinly skimmed over that you wonder what you are supposed to think when the film reaches its black denoument.
