Review of The Virgin Suicides (2000) by Johnny C — 22 May 2010
Coppola?s debut demonstrates many problems which are understandable from a first time filmmaker. The pedestal she puts her female characters on is never properly undermined and the crossing of timelines is occasionally cheesy.
The film, however, is all about atmosphere and in this regard it succeeds. It has a dreamlike quality achieved through music, nostalgia and the aloof performances, particularly those of Kirsten Dunst and James Woods.
A great debut.
