Review of The Virgin Suicides (2000) by John Y — 28 Jul 2010
Starting with the story, Jeffrey Eugenides nails it with his amazingly accurate telling of the story of how events from the past can shape your future realities. He is a master in revealing what many of us know in that women are much more complex, much more resilient, much more able to take pain, much more able to take punishment, and in many cases, much more able to be kept, than their "equal" counterparts.
Different layers of colors, cross talk, escape, what happens when men can't handle the power of a woman, what happens when one or in this case a mother, tries to control those that refuse capture.
Sophia Coppola too, will always be a MISTRESS to me. Father or not, she chose her own music, hired the right Cinematographer, and deftly showed how sometimes things are off a little. She definitely told the story and told it well.
As for Lux, screw it, I would have joined you in the car, smoked the cigarette, and gone on that road trip into forever.
