Review of The Virgin Suicides (2000) by Caleb C — 07 Jun 2014
Right off the bat, Sofia Coppola shows much promise as a writer-director. Her choices are unusual and free from cliche. Like the book, its perspective is told from the young boys, which makes the film all the more interesting because it places the teenage girls on a sort of a pedestal.
We're left wanting to know more about them in a good way. It's also shocking that a film so tragic is yet somehow not depressing. It's extremely funny, completely honest and really captures adolescence.
The acting is spot-on and the soundtrack is pitch-perfect. The film is smart, dark and revealing. Loved every minute of it.
