Review of The Virgin Suicides (2000) by Kj P — 05 Aug 2014
Sofia Coppola makes her feature film directorial debut in this film about a family with five girls who live in the neighborhood, who are torn when the youngest commits suicide (first failing to slit her wrists and then succeeding in jumping out the window onto a spiky fence).
This makes the already overprotective mother slightly harsher, and when she relents slightly by allowing the girls to go to a dance, and when one stays out all night after the dance, the mother keeps them out of school and doesn't allow them to leave the house at all.
..which causes more strife and eventually leads to the inevitable end that the title suggests...all of the remaining girls kill themselves. It is a pretty good drama period film with fine performances, a very 70s looking cinematography, and best of all it isn't all grim to watch, it has some levity to it.
Very fine film, and a great debut for Sofia Coppola.
