Review of The Virgin Spring (1960) by Shane M — 10 Oct 2006
I heard about this film a while back and always wanted to see it. IFC also had 'Wild Strawberries' but I couldn't stay up until 2am.
Anyway, at the time this film was made, I am sure it was shockingly brutal, but by todays standards, it's extremely tame. craven's 'last house on the left' which has the same basic storyline, makes this look g-rated.
Overall, the film still delivers, even if it does not shock. the mood and feelings captured bring the agony of the tragedy to life. plus, it was made in the 1950' when it was not mandatory that every film surpass 2 hours. the 90-minute running time is perfect and the story flows smoothly.
Finally while 'last house on the left' more effectively achieves a creepy and disturbing story, this film has more heart and spirit with more engaging dialogue.
