Best remembered today as the inspiration for Wes Craven's seminal shocker "Last House on the Left", this early Ingmar Bergman gem is highlighted by Sven Nykvist's luscious black and white cinematography and the powerful screen presence of a young Max von Sydow.
One of the more accessible of Bergman's films, despite the heavy religious symbolism.
