Review of The Virgin Spring (1960) by Jeremy G — 10 Oct 2007
This is one of my top 3 all-timers. As Bergman just died (unlike his undying art) I may as well attempt a review. This movie is set in medieval Sweden but so remote is it from our reality that it may as well be the end or beginning of time.
It is intensely religious in the genuine sense (i.e. not Passion of the Christ crud), simple and unbearably perfect. I mean *perfect*. A genius and only a genius makes a movie like this (same goes for his Fanny and Alexander, which defies description entirely).
Rather like the book Crime and Punishment, this movie has the meaning of life (if there is one) locked up inside of it. It's as good a guide as the Bible but with a tighter plot. Those canny Swedes.
..the IKEA of the soul beckons here!
