Review of The Virgin Spring (1960) by Felipe P — 04 Aug 2008
One of Bergman's weakest films. It starts out powerfully with a rape scene that messes with your head but then quickly turns into a conventional revenge story. My problem with all stories about revenge is that nothing is going to be earned back with vengeance anyway, so what's the point? We never find out all that much about Max von Sydow's bitter father or why he so strongly feels the need to counter murder with murder.
I much prefer "Shame", Bergman's later film that has far more interesting commentaries about violence and its consequences.
