Review of The Virgin Spring (1960) by Joe C — 14 Mar 2009
One of the great atmospheric horror films, and an Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film. The same story was updated for Wes Craven's LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, but Bergman got it right. The master director doesn't spend a lot of screen time lingering on a girl's rape and murder.
The film instead focuses on the nature of faith and the father's (Max Von Sydow) pagan vengeance, but Christian resoluteness. Actually based on an event that inspired a church to be built. Tragic and profound.
