Review of The Virgin Spring (1960) by Leighton T — 24 Jan 2010
The religiosity of the film's themes and characters are so layered and so deep here with only a simple story to guide them along. This is one of Bergman's most contemplative films. Bergman's visual acuity is on fire here with so many beautiful, haunting shots.
The rape scene, a controversy in its day, is terrifying and more than just uncomfortable (no dialogue, no music).
