Review of The Verdict (1982) by Luis O — 13 Nov 2007
This film is an actors showcase. Also Lumet does a great job as well. This movie is a tale of redemption and how one man tries to right the wrongs in his life. He's a drunk and a ambulance chaser and irresponsible and one day his friend throws him a case that could be called in.
But on his journey he discovers the truth and is willing to sacrifice an easy settlement to do the right thing even if it's not what his client wants. The obstacles pile up and the underdog story turns into something poignant and affecting.
Paul Newman is phenomenal in this film and is one of the greatest performances ever. James Mason as the rival lawyer is also compelling to watch and you can't believe the depth to which they are willing to go to win.
Lumet direction is subtle and never gets in the way of telling the story.
