Review of The Verdict (1982) by Elliot R — 31 Jan 2008
Easily one of Newman's best performances as the drunken washed out ambulance chasing lawyer struggling to redeem himself with one case. He fights against a huge law firm in a malpractice suit against a hospital, representing one person in a coma.
I'll admit that the film is somewhat contrived, but don't let that spoil the film for you. Newman acts well in Mamet's adaptation; Sidyney Lumet directs a taut character drama, which often feels like a stageplay, and the support cast is great too.
I've watched this film a fair few times and have enjoyed it every time.
