I had forgotten that there was a time when David Mamet was able to write good films in the days between his stage success with American Buffalo and Glengarry Glen Ross. Then the late eighties hit and his ability in both forms completely fell away (Wag the Dog gets an exemption here on account of the co-writing controversy with Hilary Henkin which surrounded that film).
In any case, Sidney Lumet directing Paul Newman and James Mason should be reason enough for anybody who has not seen The Verdict to act swiftly to remedy that mistake.
