Review of The Verdict (1982) by Grant S — 17 May 2010
Great courtroom drama. Good plot. Superb direction by Sidney Lumet: the tension is built with emaculate pacing and without any artificial devices. Everything is spot on, down to camera angles and scene flow.
Paul Newman is staggeringly brilliant in the lead role. (It took Ben Kingsley, as Gandhi, to prevent him from winning the best leading actor Oscar in 1983.) James Mason as the cold, calculating opposing lawyer is excellent. Jack Warden and Charlotte Rampling also deliver good performances.
