Review of The Verdict (1982) by Sean S — 25 Dec 2012
A perfectly simple courtroom drama elevated by its focus on Paul Newman's character instead of the trial itself; a man searching to make an honest difference for good, and in the process struggling to reassert his wayward life's value by doing so.
The verdict in the story is less about the malpractice case than it is with whether or not this man is a failure. He, in essence, puts himself on trial. Both verdicts, both literal and symbolic, appear written even before an argument is made making the sense of desperation compelling.
