Review of The Verdict (1982) by Martin O — 04 Mar 2006
Good, but not great courtroom drama. Though there are solid supporters like James Mason, Charlotte Rampling and Jack Warden, the heart and soul of this film is Paul Newman. The way he plays alcoholic lawyer Frank Galvin is masterful, he does what is every actor`s real duty: disappears into the character.
The pace is slow and thanks to that "The Verdict" is not too suspensful, same time the pace does good to the character study. This film is not to be watched as a plain courtroom drama or a thriller, it is story of how one man, in the name of a noble cause, wins over himself.
And Newman makes this deep character study work.
